Washington spent most of his adult life designing and improving the mansion overlooking the Potomac River. Hundreds of visitors came to Mount Vernon to meet Washington and admire his stately residence. The mansion achieved its present day appearance by 1799, incorporating such features as the cupola, colonnades, and dependency buildings.
