The Story

This elegant dinner plate showcases the extravagant Tobacco Leaf pattern—one of the most highly prized designs of the 18th century. Originally created in China for export to the Portuguese and Brazilian markets, this pattern was renowned for its rich colors and opulent detail.

George and Martha Washington owned pieces of Tobacco Leaf china, and original examples are preserved today in the Mount Vernon collection. The design features a delicate phoenix bird resting among the vibrant leaves of the flowering Nicotiana (Tobacco) plant, reflecting the exotic artistry of the time.

Crafted with extraordinary attention to detail, the original pattern incorporated twenty-seven colors and accents of 22k gold. One of these historic pieces is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
