Eighteenth-century gentlemen often carried small swords as part of formal civilian attire for social and ceremonial occasions. George Washington owned several of these jewel-like, lightweight weapons. This exquisitely crafted letter opener is adapted from a sword owned by Washington, famously depicted in Charles Willson Peale's 1772 portrait of Washington as a Virginia colonel. That same sword is believed to have been worn by Washington when he resigned his commission in Annapolis (1783) and when he was inaugurated as the nation’s first president (April 30, 1789).
